Here’s a pretty cool poster that’s just appeared on eBay – it’s a promotional poster for the Pat Garrett And Billy The Kid album.
Bob Dylan appeared in the 1973 film, playing a character called ‘Alias’ and he provided the soundtrack, which was also released as an album in 1973. The most noted song from this record is Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door. (It’s also the only one that bar bands in Thailand know when I request a Dylan song, but that’s another story!).
Anyway, back to the poster. The item that is being sold on eBay (July, 2016) is pretty nice. It’s a montage of stills from the film.
We should make clear – as this confused me a bit at first – is that the poster on sale on eBay with montage stills of the film is the poster for the soundtrack album, and not the promotional for the actual film. The film promotional poster is quite different, with just a sketch style image of the main character James Coburn (right).
The promotional poster for the soundtrack album has Columbia Records at the bottom, while the film poster has MGM Presents.
Personally, I find the film poster a lot more stylish than the soundtrack poster, which looks like a hastily drawn up collage.
The Buy It Now asking price on eBay for the album promotional poster is £65, with the option to make an offer.
Most promotional posters for albums I’ve seen, particularly the later ones, settle around the £10 – £20 mark. Pat Garrett, being an earlier release with something of a novelty value and in good condition, could go for a little more.
But I wouldn’t price it above £40, simply because it’s not the most notable album, and the poster itself isn’t that attractive. However, the poster is fairly rare so it would make a nice addition to any collection.
We’ll keep watching the listing and see what the final sale price is for the Pat Garret and Billy the Kid soundtrack promotional poster.
